There are multiple workshops available while the conference is in progress. These workshops will be approximately 3 hours long and will run in parallel to conference talks. There are four workshops on day 1 and four on day 2. Please see descriptions of these below.


Day 1 Workshops

Around the World of Agile Metrics – Larry Maccherone

You have wagered the success of your team on the Agile or Lean methodology, so how will you improve your chances?  In business, as in globetrotting adventures, you need to balance your need for a plan and your need to adapt.  You have mapped out an understanding of the business environment and an itinerary for success.  You’ll need some instruments to give you feedback about your progress, so you can make decisions.  You need to adapt to changing priorities or business conditions in a way that takes uncertainty into account, rather than ignoring it.

In this seminar, we will cover the entire lifecycle of a Lean/Agile metrics process, from metric selection through to making decisions with data.  You will leave with a deep understanding of a wide range of Lean/Agile metrics concepts including: common metrics, probabilistic forecasting, using metrics to persuade decision makers, and basic data science for use in your own organizations.

Our target audience includes executives or managers wanting a better understanding of Agile metrics and analysis; people responsible for Lean/Agile project planning and reporting; or simply people interested in expanding their knowledge on metrics and analytics in Scrum, Lean, Kanban or ScrumBan processes.




Scrum with Kanban – Daniel Vacanti and Steve Porter

Many people believe they must choose either Scrum or Kanban when deciding which framework/method to use for their team.  Kanban encourages teams to focus on the flow of work while Scrum encourages teams to adopt a rhythm that regularly brings team members together to achieve a common goal.  Why should teams have to give up one to get the other?  Join’s Steve Porter and ActionableAgile’s Daniel Vacanti to learn how to seamlessly marry these two approaches.  This workshop will give you the tools you need to bring flow to your Scrum team without losing the regular cadences that the framework excels at providing.


NoEstimates Workshop: Forecasting with Less Effort and More Accuracy – Matt Philip

Wondering what NoEstimates means in practice or why you would want to try NoEstimates?  Perhaps you’ve heard the buzz or read Vasco Duarte’s book.  Maybe you simply want to understand how you can spend less time estimating and more time delivering working software – all while providing your customers with some understanding of predictability.  If so, this group boardgame-based workshop will help you understand what and to what degree different factors influence delivery time.  Join this session to learn how to move from upfront intuition-based estimates to create a data-based probabilistic forecast that provides a more reliable way to talk about when stuff will be done – and expend less effort to do so.  Learn to forecast when things will be done – with less effort and more accuracy!


High Performance via Psychological Safety – Joshua Kerievsky and Heidi Helfand

Is your culture dominated by fear, blame and other toxic behaviors? Are people protecting themselves rather than pulling together, obsessing over customers and helping your organization succeed? If so, you may have a lack of psychological safety. When it’s present, individuals feel safe being vulnerable, safe taking risks, safe making mistakes and safe handling conflict. Long-term high performance depends on psychological safety. It leads to greater transparency, closer relationships, better collaboration and better outcomes. As leaders, it’s our duty to develop, model and foster psychological safety. In this interactive workshop, you’ll develop skills for growing psychological safety in yourself, your teams and your organization.

Day 2 Workshops

Deploying Strategic Agility through the X-Matrix – Karl Scotland

In this workshop, we will explore how to boost an Agile Transformation with Strategy Deployment, a style of organizational improvement that engages the entire workforce in figuring out how a business can survive and thrive.  The workshop will introduce Strategy Deployment using a framework called the X-Matrix – an A3 format which concisely visualizes the alignment of True North, Aspirations, Strategy, Tactics and Evidence on a single sheet of paper.  This approach enables a transformation to be viewed as a form of Catchball, a Lean practice with which improvement ideas are developed as they are passed around an organization.  Participanats will learn how this can be achieved with additional Backbriefing and Experiment A3s, which promote collaboration between teams to experiment and discover solutions.  As a result, solutions can emerge from the people closest to the problem, rather than being defined and directed by managers.

Portfolio Kanban and Forecasting in Kanbanize – Dimitar Karaivanov & Daniel Vacanti

We see that teams are becoming more and more lean and agile.  We often think that if each of our teams is agile, then the whole organization is agile.  This causes the confusion when our long-term goals take more time to achieve and our strategy is not implemented clearly in every department’s work.  How to make the whole organization as effective as its individual teams?

This workshop’s goal is to provide a solution to the problem through concrete and tangible measures.  It is a practical introduction to the portfolio Kanban in Kanbanize, which in combination with data analysis and forecasting is able to give organizations the push to become what they envisioned to be.

The seminar will take place in two parts.  During the first part, participants will gain a detailed understanding of Kanban on a portolio level, the benefits, use cases, and practical examples how to design their work breakdown structure in order to best map their process.  In the second part, we will explore in depth the importance of analytics, the power of forecasting with ActionableAgile, and why do we need them in Kanban.  The combination of these two techniques will increase the overall potential of the organization and moreover, it will improve your understanding of the way it functions.  By making teams predictable, we enable them to link their daily tasks to greater strategic initiatives.

Improving Service Delivery through Kanban – Klaus Leopold

In its very root, working effectively simply means understanding what’s going on and performing the right improvements based on this understanding.  That sounds perhaps quite easy, but unfortunately, it’s not because knowledge work is not really intuitive.  Some examples:  1) Work is finished faster when we are not working all the time.  2) We don’t serve our customers well when we start their work immediately.  3) Working faster has nothing to do with finishing work faster 4) Starting work earlier leads to finishing work later 5) etc..

This is by no means intuitive, however, understanding these aspects of work systems is essential when it comes to improving service delivery.  In this workshop, we will do an experiment where participants will answer questions like these by themselves.

In addition, we will also cover aspects of local optimization vs global optimization and what this means for improving your service delivery.  The main problem is that most methods focus on team-level performance.  In the best case, you don’t see any improvement, in most of the cases it is getting worse.  Local optimization leads to global sub optimization!  But what does this mean?  And how can you increase service delivery beyond the team?  In this workshop we will find answers to these questions.
